For the 2025 tax year, the contribution limit is:

  • $7,000 if you are under 50.
  • $8,000 if you are 50 or older.

For the 2024 tax year, the contribution limit was:

  • $7,500 if you were 50 or older.

IRA Contribution Deadlines

You can contribute to an IRA for a given tax year until the tax filing deadline of the following year. However, deadlines vary depending on the type of IRA you are contributing to.

Standard Contribution Deadline (Traditional & Roth IRAs)

  • For the 2024 tax year, the deadline to contribute is April 15, 2025.
  • Extensions do not apply—even if you file an extension, contributions for 2024 must be made by April 15, 2025.

SEP IRA Contribution Deadline

  • SEP IRAs follow different rules. You can contribute for the 2024 tax year up until your business tax filing deadline, including extensions.
  • If you file an extension, your SEP IRA contribution deadline is extended to October 15, 2025.
