How can I check my 401(k) plan’s vesting schedule?

To check your vesting schedule, which outlines how employees earn ownership of employer contributions, follow these steps:

  1. Check the Plan Highlights: The first two pages of the plan document usually contain a summary of the plan including the vesting schedule.
  2. Review the Adoption Agreement: The Vesting section (Section E) of the Adoption Agreement provides details on:
    • Vesting computation method (e.g., elapsed time or hours of service).
    • Vesting exclusions (such as service before plan start date).
    • Exceptions (e.g., full vesting upon death or disability).

To locate this information:

  • Navigate to Resources > Documents. 
  • Open your plan document and find the Adoption Agreement.
  • Go to Section E: Vesting to see the vesting schedule and related details.
