It’s as easy as 1-2-3
- Activate your account. If you haven’t logged in before, this is your first step.
- Set a contribution rate. You need to contribute at least $50 into the 401(k) to qualify for the reward.
- Open a Cash Reserve account. This is where we’ll deposit your $100.

There are no fees and it’s FDIC insured up to $2 million ($4 million for joint accounts) once your funds reach our program banks (subject to certain conditions). Betterment is not a bank.

- If you’ve been eligible to contribute to your 401(k) plan for more than 30 days (as of 02/25/25 or earlier), haven’t yet funded your account, and your employer is participating in this program, this incentive is for you.
- Beginning 04/02/25, you can double-check your eligibility by visiting our Rewards Center. If you’re eligible, you’ll see the offer listed there.

Once you set a contribution rate, it will typically take 1-2 payroll cycles for the contributions to start coming out of your paycheck and into your 401(k).

If your contribution comes out of your 05/30 paycheck that is fine, as long as the contribution settles into your account by 06/15/2025.

There is no fee charged to you for using Betterment’s Cash Reserve account. And you’ll always have access to your cash (you’ll sync the account to a funding source, typically a checking account). Cash Reserve is only available to clients of Betterment LLC, which is not a bank, and cash transfers to program banks are conducted through the clients’ brokerage accounts at Betterment Securities.
